What I read last week!

The SaaS Playbook by Rob Walling discussed everything bootstrapping your own B2B SaaS (Business to Business, Software as a Service) company! It was a very straightforward detailed “tutorial” on how to build a multimillion dollar startup without venture capital. Walling shared his best advice for finding product-market fit, pricing your product, marketing to your customers, structuring a team, keeping track of metrics, and working on your mindset as an entrepreneur. I honestly intend to read this book again because he dropped a lot of gems that I would like to incorporate into my venture as I continue down the development phase. A part of me was stressed out reading this book and all the things I hadn’t thought of, but reinvigorated with a new set of ideas and creative approaches towards success. I am so excited about building a software company, and if you’re curious about the kind of businesses that are some of the biggest in today’s landscape, (Google, Zoom, Shopify… the list is endless) then I recommend giving this book a try.

What I am currently reading for this week!

I have been diving deep into business content lately, and I am not going to lie, focusing solely on that while launching my own venture has left me wanting to refresh my reading palate. So while this week I am still reading What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School; I have started Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, which I bought years ago and decided to pick up recently. It is so interesting to me how this book is actually his personal reflections and was not even intended to be published. I am so excited to conquer (get it, because he was an emperor) Meditations and to learn more about Roman philosophy (even though this book was translated from Greek). I definitely am taking a little longer to read What They Don’t Teach You, given its focus on corporate and management rather than the entrepreneurship side I am more drawn to, but I recognize its value and intend to see it through. I am also reading Le Petit Prince which is a children’s book in French now that I am progressing to more intermediate levels on my French journey. This book is definitely a challenge but I am finding fun and joy in the process of improving my reading and comprehension skills. I feel like this is a classic children’s book, so even if you don’t speak French, pick it up in English!

In case you missed it, I wrote this about What They Don’t Teach You, last week:)

He offers his unique and interesting prospective on effective leadership and successful business dealings. McCormack begins by emphasizing the importance of knowing how to read people, which extends beyond body language interpretations. He shares how business situations always come down to people situations; the sooner you know about the person you are dealing with, the more effective you end up being. McCormack also goes into the art of creating impressions. He details that a substantial part of business is the way that people perceive you and he outlines the strategies to manage these perceptions. He writes, “The most effective executives impress in unobtrusive ways. Sometimes this is a simple act or gesture that, if never made, would probably never be missed; that’s precisely why it will be noticed when it is made.” While I am still reading, my early impressions suggest that this books holds great value for those aspiring to work in management and future C-Suite executives. I am hoping that as I continue to read, McCormack explores starting your own venture and details more wisdom from his entrepreneurial journey.

Books that I have my eye on/are on queue for the next read!

  • Good to Great is still on queue from last week recommended by, Emma Grede, co-founder & CEO of Good American and Founding Partner of Skims!

  • Zero to One, by Peter Thiel (founder of PayPal and first outside investor into Facebook) and Blake Masters.

SO SO SO excited to read these and review/recommend them for you all!
